SafeGameMeat workshop on the transition to non-lead hunting ammunition
On 23–24 September 2026, the SafeGameMeat COST Action will organise a hybrid workshop at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW) in Berlinentitled “Acceptance, effectiveness and practical implementation of non-lead ammunition.”
The event will bring together researchers, representatives of the hunting sector and other stakeholders to discuss the transition from lead to non-lead hunting ammunition, with particular attention to hunter acceptance, practical experience and barriers to change.
The programme will also address the effectiveness of non-lead rifle and shotgun ammunition, wound ballistics, precision and animal-welfare considerations, as well as regulatory and technical aspects of implementation. Further contributions will consider communication with hunters and potential implications of alternative ammunition materials for food safety and the environment.
The workshop will be held in hybrid format, allowing participation both on site in Berlin and online.
