Bats are sensitive to artificial light. Since both habitats and roosts of bats can potentially be affected by artificial light through outdoor lighting, the conservation of bats must be considered in approval procedures for lighting projects. In this one-day webinar, the participants will learn how bats respond directly to different lighting sources, light colours and brightness, how they are indirectly influenced through their prey (mainly insects) and how the mostly negative impact of artificial light on bats can be avoided or mitigated. Practical examples will be used to illustrate how sustainable lighting concepts can be established from the perspective of bat conservation. The webinar is aimed at consultants, experts, as well as representatives of authorities and non-governmental organizations.

The course will be held in English.

Lecturers:

PD Dr. Christian Voigt is head of the Department of Evolutionary Ecology at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) and has been researching the impact of light pollution on bats for more than a decade. Under his guidance, the first guidelines for consideration of bat conservation in outdoor lighting projects were written (EUROBATS Publication Series #8 "Guidelines for consideration of bats in lighting projects").

PD Dr. Franz Hölker is leader of the Research Group of Light Pollution and Ecophysiology at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) and since 2009 has been studying the effects of artificial light at night on a wide range of biological processes, from gene expression to land-water interactions and ecosystem functions. Franz Hölker was head of the research platform “Loss of the Night” and chair of the European COST Action “LoNNe” (Loss of the Night Network).

Event format & technical details:

Webinar (live in Central European Time).

We will be using the video conferencing tool 'Zoom'. You will need a stable internet connection for your participation.

Participation is possible via a current browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox).

Alternatively, you can download the Zoom desktop client: https://zoom.us/download.

We suggest using a laptop/PC instead of a smart device to best follow along.

During the webinar, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the live discussion. For good audio transmission, we recommend the use of a headset to reduce background noise. If you do not have a microphone/headset, you may as well ask questions via the chat option.

Registered participants will receive the access link to the webinar a few days prior to the event.

In addition, the live webinar will be recorded and will be available for registered participants for three days afterwards, yet without the opportunity of asking questions to the lecturers.

If you have to cancel your registration, please send an email to akademie@izw-berlin.de. Please note that your cancellation is only valid after you received a confirmation of acceptance.

In case of cancellations until 15th November 2022, 80% of the registration fees will be refunded. After 15th November, no refund is possible.
